| Multi-Exit Specimen Distribution Vessel R2P2 |
|
|
The R2P2 Cluster Tool is a development of the linear rack and pinion transporter, where a single ended rack and pinion can be rotated within a circular vessel until it is aligned in a preset position at a radial port on the housing chamber by a rotary drive. Once locked in position, the same rotary drive moves the rack out through the port. R2P2s are normally mounted at the centre of a series of chambers and form a central hub from which all of the transfer takes place, they can be used to join one or more systems together. The R2P2 chamber is normally connected by isolation valves to each of the connecting chambers allowing it to be sealed off as required. Careful design can allow storage carousels to be placed inside the chamber to allow sample storage as well as transfer from one vessel. |
| A port mounted at the base of the R2P2 allows a pump
to maintain the chamber at a pressure lower than 10e-10mbar
if required. There are 2 sizes of R2P2: the first uses a 635mm O.D. (25") chamber to give a rack insertion of 305mm; the second uses a 762mm O.D. (30") chamber to give a rack insertion of 305mm. Remember that you need internal clearance between the retracted rack and the R2P2 chamber wall when moving a sample inside it. See below for drawing. |

| R2P2 Mounting Chamber Design |
| A customised mounting chamber is required for use with
an R2P2 mechanism and should be considered from the very beginning. We
have many different chamber designs and would be pleased to advise you
as to what is required. Remember that extra ports can be designed in at the outset to allow for future system expansion. The number of preset positions determines the number of ports that the R2P2 rack may address. Any number from 2 to 8 can be accommodated (depending on chamber size and mounting ports) with the most common being 4 or 6 equi-spaced ports. Remember that at each connection port you need to have on average: 1 x 114mm or 150mm O.D. port for rack transfer (normally mounted to a valve). 1 x 70mm port for mounting a wobble stick (for sample transfer if required). 1 x 70mm port for mounting a viewport (this should be considered a minimum size and number to oversee sample transfer). Plus 1 x 200mm O.D. port on base of chamber for pumping requirements; a correctly chosen pump can enable pressures in the 10e-10 mbar region to be obtained. Other ports can be added to suit your own particular requirements. A port for pressure measurement is also advisable. |
| Specimen Handling |
| The end of the R2P2 rack can be easily adapted to carry a number of
different sorts of specimens such as discs, ESCA stubs, XL transfer,
etc. For more information, please contact our
Technical Support Department
or contact your local agent
to discuss your specific requirements. |
![]() Operational Note: To rotate samples from one Chamber Port to another needs to be done in an anti-clockwise direction. Rotate the RD6 Rotary Drive until the extended rack comes against the stop. Lift the plunger and continue rotating the RD6 Rotary Drive anti-clockwise, gently, until the plunger drops into the chosen port hole. |
